Union Square Donuts
March 2016
I was able to start off my Donut Bucket List with family! Well, kind-of. I was staying with my brother James, but he had to go to work when I was heading out for my walk to Union Square to pick up my first batch of donuts. My brother lives in Cambridge so it was just about a 30 minute walk north to the next town of Somerville where Union Square Donuts lives.
The shop is tucked into a classic New England street (not a lot of room and lots of one-way directional signs everywhere - I walked down one of the wrong streets initially when I first made it to Union Square). Once I made it, I walked in and could see the full open kitchen, which I always enjoy. You could tell these donuts were going to be fresh!
I went through the menu and landed on four. The maple bacon, the sugar raised, the sea salt bourbon caramel and the Boston Cream. I was most excited for the Boston Cream Donut because well, obviously, I was in Boston! I purchased my four donuts and sat down (there was limited seating - just a couple of two person tables - which was perfect for me) at a table by the window ready to begin my sampling!
The Boston Cream was the clear winner in my book. It had a nice thick serving of chocolate fudgy-like frosting on top and the dough was chewy and dense. You picked it up and could tell it was going to fill you up. The filling was pretty good, I personally probably would have preferred the cream to be a bit sweeter but that’s just me and my sweet tooth. The maple bacon was my second favorite. The sugar raised was a solid donut, though nothing to write home about, and while the caramel was definitely fresh, it just reaffirmed my stance that salt is not a necessary addition with donuts.
Overall, a very successful trip to Boston!! A do-again (that I have done-again).
