Sublime Doughnuts
MARCH 2018
This was my first trip of 2018 and I knew I was in for a great year of donut eating adventures! My wife and I made it down to Georgia for a fun trip filled to the brim with food. Multiple donut shops and some pizza to boot! We actually hit Revolution Doughnuts first (more on that below) and Sublime was the second stop of the day. Both shops were easily accessible by car from downtown Atlanta so we spent some time finding our way around the city. The Georgia Tech campus is home to Sublime Doughnuts (at least the one we went to). I’m a huge fan of college campuses because in my opinion they have some of the best food around. I know college campus food isn’t always everyone’s favorite but it’s exactly my style and more often than not includes a great donut spot or two! Georgia Tech’s campus proved me right with Sublime Doughnuts, which is clearly catering to the college student crowd as a 24-hour shop - lucky them!
The first thing I noticed about Sublime was its logo - one of the best that I have seen. It’s a floating donut with wings. The overall branding was on point for this shop which was located in a strip mall and as soon as I walked in I could instantly understand why this place was on my list! In addition to the fun branding throughout the shop, the donut display case was tremendous and really inviting. As a 24-hour store, I’m typically worried about freshness but we made sure to drop by in the morning and the selection looked quite fresh and alleaved any fears I initially had. There was a great selection to choose from in all shapes, sizes, and fillings. I’d say the style and type of donuts/dough is somewhere in between a mom and pop corner shop and a high-end artisanal small-batch shop. There were a handful of tables in the shop and after we got our box of donuts we promptly sat down to dig in. My favorite was their Reese's donut which had a delicious Reese’s crumble, chocolate glaze, and dollop of peanut butter in the center. As a self-proclaimed sucker for a good-filled donut I also had to try their Boston cream specialty (which is shaped as an A for Atlanta) and their strawberries and cream which were both quite tasty as well. The fritter was my least favorite just because I think that one had been sitting; but I couldn’t not get a peach fritter in Georgia! The nice selection Sublime offers means there are going to be plenty of great options to try whenever I make it back!
Other Georgia locations that we visited:
Revolution Doughnuts & Coffee
During our Georgia trip we also made it to Revolution! This place was packed when we walked in early on a Saturday morning, which is typically a great sign. The shop was a standalone corner shop in what seemed like a hipster neighborhood, which was the vibe of the store as well. There was some phenomenal merchandise for sale and a really fun corner with some signs that we could really get behind, such as “Donut Worry Be Happy.” We were pleasantly surprised to learn that these were vegan donuts! While we have been to some shops that offer vegan options, this was by far the largest selection we had seen so kudos to Revolution for making sure there is no excuse to miss out on a donut! They had a really nice selection and it looked like they were really churning through all the freshly made donuts sitting on wracks that were visible as soon as you walked in. We filled our box with a selection that included a glazed yeast, blueberry, dark chocolate, and vanilla, and apple fritter. We found a spot at one of the couple tables for two and sampled away! The color and consistency really popped with these donuts, my favorite of which was the chocolate. They have a filled rotating special that we missed out on as well which will absolutely be on the list for whenever we return!
